Treating Dark Scars with Melarase Creams

Facial acne can be annoying…especially given that it can lead to characteristic scars that can last months to even years. Cystic acne can cause either atrophic scarring, in which there are permanent dents in the skin; or dark scars that can last for months.

Dermatologists attribute acne-related dark scars to a process known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. When pimples erupt, the inflammation in the skin stimulates pigment cells to produce excessive amounts of melanin, which gets stored in the skin. Even though the pimple disappears, the melanin continues to stain the skin and cause a dark spot.

Los Angeles plastic surgeon and skin expert, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, recommends a combination of laser therapy, RF ablation, and Melarase skin products to eliminate dark scars on the skin. Lasers and RF can zap away melanin in the skin, but need to be combined with proper skincare in order to prevent the skin from darkening again.

He recommends the following skincare products for dark acne scars:

  • MelaClenz Brightening Cleanser
  • Melarase AM: Day-time skin lightener with SPF 30
  • Melarase PM: Night-time skin lightener
  • Melapads: Daily Exfoliating Pads

 Usage:

  •  Wash your face twice daily with MelaClenz
  • Apply Melapads to the face, followed by one pump of Melarase AM in the morning
  • Apply Melapads to the face, followed by one pump of Melarase PM in the evening before bed.

Additional Products:

  • Replenish Retinoid Cream: Use nightly to enhance exfoliation, shrink pores, and reduce breakouts.
  • Elevase Moisture Booster: Daily ceramide cream that helps moisturize the skin.

Scar Modulation: Massaging your scar can reduce inflammatory mediators that are responsible for chronic inflammation and scar overgrowth. Its a rather simple technique that inactivates celluar infammation mechanisms that can lead to keloid and hypertrophic scars. Start by applying a thin coat of Plato's Scar Serum twice daily to the scar and gently massaging the scar footprint. Be gentle, taking care not to slough off newly formed skin and reducing shear force on the dermis. This is ideal for new and old scars.
